Planetary gearbox fault diagnosis via extension EMD and GDE to identify instantaneous damping ratio

Abstract:The instantaneous damping ratio can describe the vibration energy attenuation during mechanical system operation, and it also can reflect the information of energy change. Based on this, a fault diagnosis method is proposed by extracting the characteristics of the instantaneous damping ratio. In order to satisfy the mono-component requirement of generating differential equation (GDE), the signal is firstly decomposed into intrinsic mode function (IMF) components via empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and restrained the end effects in EMD by symmetrical extension. Secondly, according to the characteristics of planetary gearbox vibration signals, we choose a sensitive component for further analysis. Meanwhile, we put forward GDE to calculate the instantaneous damping ratio of sensitive component. Finally, the fault characteristic frequencies are matched according to Fourier spectrum of the instantaneous damping ratio. The proposed method is illustrated by a numerical simulated signal analysis and experimental signal of planetary gearbox.
