Abstract:Because of the irregular rotational displacement of curved girder bridge under earthquake there are some limits to calculate pounding effect with pounding element approach. In order to analyze the uneven distributing rule of seismic pounding effect for curved girder bridge, the new approach of explicit dynamic contact algorithm is presented. Seismic impactive response characteristic of girder, pier and block is analyzed. The results indicated that pounding action between girder and abutment limits longitudinal displacement of girder and makes bending moment of fixed pier less than that with pounding effect unconsidered. After pounding normal stress of upper board on girder end and radial stress of blocks inside and outside the curve distribute severely inhomogeneously. On section of girder end the stress of flange is less than the stress of upper board between webs. The radial stress of block at outside curve is more than that at inside curve distinctly. The seismic pounding effect makes maximal tensile stress or compressive stress occur at inside curve or outside curve. This can provide theoretical guide for interpretation of the seismic damage of pounding for curved girder bridge.
