Abstract:LS-DYNA explicit finite element code was ueed to perform a numerical investigation on the energy absorption behavior of aluminum-composite square and circular hybrid tubes under axial quasi-static and impact crushing. The force-displacement curve, which describes the energy capability of the structure, was obtained. The finite element model was verified by comparing the numerical results of one square hybrid tube with the experiment data from the reference under quasi-static crushing. Based on this model, parametric study was conducted to determine the effect of different winding thickness of composite material on energy absorption behavior of square and circular tubes with the same tube length, thickness and outer perimeter The results show that the cross-sectional configuration of hybrid tubes has a great effect on energy absorption capability. More energy is absorbed by circular hybrid tubes than by square hybrid tubes under axial quasi-static crushing. The energy absorbed by impact crushing is not only related to its energy absorption capability, but also affected by the impact intensity. It is necessary to control the stiffness of the hybrid tubes in the design of composite thickness, avoiding reduction of energy absorption caused by hybrid tubes resilience.
