Abstract:In this research, a new type of isolated bearing referred to as self-centering rocking bearing, SCRB), which applies rocking and rolling mechanism of the bearing, is promoted. A theoretical model for the isolated structure equipped with this bearing is constructed to simulate the relation of force and displacement under excitations. Investigated parameters include diameter of rolling surface, aspect ratio and vibrating frequency of the superstructure. Numerical analysis is proceeded to investigate the performance of the structure under the excitations of free, harmonic and earthquake type vibrations. Calculated results indicate that the appropriately designed structure with SCRB vibrates without resonance for any particular frequency, in other words, the isolated structure does not have fixed natural frequency. The acceleration and displacement of isolated structure are all significantly reduced under the excitation of strong earthquake to manifest the feasibility of SCRB applied on the isolation of buildings.
