Roll Reduction of Yachts by Using Electromagnetic Shunt Damping Absorbers

Abstract:The yacht-roll affects the stability and safety of ships, and also worsens the living comfortableness on board. Therefore, the roll reduction is always paid more attention by designers and researchers. Traditional treatments by using antiroll fins, sometimes, cannot well satisfy the safety requirement in some violent sail conditions. This paper introduces an electromagnetic shunt damping absorber to improve the stability and safety of the yacht. The governing equation of a yacht coupled with such an absorber is derived. The dynamic parameters of the absorber are determined by particle swarm optimization algorithm. The numerical simulation is conducted based on the optimal parameters, and results show that the absorber presented can well reduce the yacht roll.
