Abstract:Indentation and perforation behaviors of sandwich panels with composite face sheets and closed-cellaluminum foam core are investigated experimentally. Quasi-static and low-velocity impact tests are carried out by usingan MTS system and a drop hammer tester, respectively. Experimental results show that the deformation and failure of thesandwich panels is roughly confined to the area directly underneath the indenter and the material outside the contact areaappears to be intact. Effects of some key parameters on the overall energy absorption behavior of the panels are exploredand compared through an energy-absorbing effectiveness factor, such as impact energy, face sheets and core thickness, core density and indenter nose shape, as well as boundary conditions.
