Abstract The traditional seismic dynamic amplification factor spectrum is determined according to the maximum acceleration of ground motion and the maximum acceleration of structure, and the non-stationarity in time domain is not fully considered. By comparing the occurring time of maximum response of different periodic structures and the occurring time of peaks of ground motion, it is verified that the peak values play an important role in the structural response spectrum as well. The concept of equivalent dynamic amplification factor spectrum considering several maximal peak effects is proposed, and the statistical spectra with different site types are calculated and the conservativeness is verified. In view of the rationality of the standard deviation spectrum considering the non-stationarity in frequency domain, the corresponding statistical spectrum is calculated and its higher spectral value in long period is confirmed. Considering the characteristics of traditional spectrum, equivalent spectrum and standard deviation spectrum, the concept of general dynamic amplification factor spectrum with sufficient conservativeness is proposed based on three spectral envelopes. The fitting ratio formula of general dynamic amplification factor spectrum and traditional spectrum is presented. The analysis example shows that the seismic design or checking calculation based on the general dynamic amplification factor spectrum has higher safety.
