Abstract Based on the topological optimization of crashworthiness and robust design method, a high-level hyper-elastic re-directive crash cushion was designed, to realize the lightweight requirements and the overall quality optimization of the re-directive crash cushion.The objective of optimization design is the maximization of energy absorption, the energy absorption unit of the crash cushion was optimized by the topological analysis of crashworthiness, the optimal force transmission path of the energy absorption unit was determined, and then, the energy absorption unit with clear configuration was extracted.The collision safety was verified by using a finite element model of the re-directive crash cushion.Taking the uncertainties of angle, speed, and quality of the experimental vehicle as noise factors, and based on a robust design method, the optimal sizes of the re-directive crash cushion were determined.The results show that the proposed crashworthiness topology optimization and robust design method are effective, the TS class (100 km/h) hyper-elastic re-directive crash cushion can meet the requirements of the current evaluation standard.
