Abstract Joints presented in structures substantially reduce the overall rigidity and strength of structures in the joint area, also affect the explosion resistance of structures to different extents.To study the influence of joint conditions on the extent of damage to specimens,experiments to assess the resistance against surface contact explosion of spliced concrete specimens were conducted.Failure characteristics of the specimens when explosives were detonated at the joint were discussed.A finite element analysis software was used to simulate the experiments: the results thereof are in good agreement with the experimental data.The joint at a corner among three selected locations is the worst performance case under a contact explosion.The analysis reveals that the joint position has a great influence on the destructive effect of the explosion.Moreover, the width of the joints is the major factor influencing joint conditions.For shield lining structures, when the width of the joints is 2 mm, the depth of damage is maximised, which is close to 1.5 times the depth of damage at the centre of the test piece.
