Abstract Active vibration control technology is an effective way to reduce low frequency vibration. A large number of theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out for simple structures. However, the control effect and technical feasibility for the typical large and complex bulkhead structure still need to be verified. The piezoelectric excitation is used as the secondary control actuator to carry out the experimental research on the active vibration control of large and complex stiffened bulkhead structure. For single frequency excitation, the feed-forward multi-channel control method is adopted. The results show that the method can gain average vibration reduction level of 8 dB on the monitoring points for two selected frequency points. Due to the non-uniformity of surface vibration of complex structure, the vibration reduction level of each monitoring point is not uniform. The optimal combination of control forces can ensure high vibration reduction at the monitoring point with high level of vibration. However, for the monitoring points with small level of vibration, the control force combination is not optimal and the vibration reduction is limited.
