Abstract Flutter is one of the main topics in aeroelasticity. Based on the nonlinear flutter model of a two-dimensional airfoil, several qualitative and/or quantitative methods for nonlinear flutter analysis are summarized. The qualitative methods included mainly refer to qualitative theories for ordinary differential equations. The quantitative methods are classified, for convenience only, as equivalent linearization method, describing function method, harmonic balance method, perturbation method and so on. Aiming at highlighting the relative merits of each type of methods, the mentioned techniques are briefly discussed and compared with each other.
