Abstract Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is an effective method to evaluate structural dynamic performance. However, the variable time-delay, caused by the dynamics of and interaction between the transfer system and the physical specimen, affects the accuracy and stability of RTHS seriously. To deal with this problem, an additive error model-based adaptive compensation method is proposed. In the method, the system, composed of the transfer system and physical specimen, is divided into the nominal and additive error models. The inverse of the nominal model is used as the feedforward controller to eliminate the primary time-delay of the system. An adaptive time-delay compensator is designed utilizing the additive error model to eliminate the residual time-delay further. The results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the simulation accuracy of RTHS and significantly reduce the dependence on the adaptive law of the adaptive delay compensation method. Moreover, the proposed method exhibits strong robustness.
