Abstract The wind-induced vibration control of a high-rise television tower is actively carried out in this study by using passive friction dampers. The three dimensional finite element model and two dimensional simplified dynamic model of the television tower are established respectively. The motion of equation of the controlled tower is developed and wind loading is numerically simulated. The Hefei television tower is taken as an example to investigate the feasibility of the proposed control approach based on passive friction dampers. The observations made from numerical investigation indicate that the wind-induced vibration of the television tower can be substantially suppressed by using passive friction dampers with optimal damper parameters.
