Abstract As a new kind of self-adaptation time-frequency analysis approach, Local mean decomposition (LMD) is began to study in the field of fault diagnosis. In this paper, the simulation signal is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for processing multi-component modulated signal which expresses the characteristics of fault signals of gear. Then, the LMD method was applied to diagnose gear faults including wear, fracture and spalling by extracting the fault characteristics from the test signals. The analysis results demonstrate that LMD can diagnose gear faults and improve the accuracy of gear fault diagnosis, compared with the traditional demodulation approach
