Abstract The contact deformation and energy dissipation characteristic are complicated problems at multi rough discontinuous contact interfaces. In this paper, the “multi-layered rough surface metal panels--rigid plane” model is proposed to study the contact force-deformation relation and energy dissipation characteristics at multi rough interfaces based on the work done on single interface. The concept of energy loss ratio is defined to describe the energy dissipation characteristics at different interfaces. The contact force and deformation results obtained using the Finite Element Method (FEM) for multi interfaces of different surface topography, different plastic deformation behaviors during the loading and unloading process are presented. The effect of friction is also investigated and comparisons are drawn with frictionless cases. Expressions relate contact force and deformation are established for both the loading and unloading process and good correlation with calculated results are obtained. The influences of surface topography, plastic deformation behaviors and friction on energy dissipation characteristics are also presented.
