Abstract The fault diagnosis method based on equivalent external load is a new solution of the equipment fault diagnosis and makes full use of the advantage of the traditional fault diagnosis method based on signal analysis and the linear dynamic model of the research object. In the method, the actual equivalent external load (residual displacement) is calculated according to the monitored dynamics response and then is matched by an optimization algorithm in the theory fault space in order to identify the equipment fault quickly and accurately. Firstly, the development history and advantages of the fault diagnosis method based on equivalent external load are introduced and the basic principle and diagnosis flowchart of the discussed method in the time and frequency domain are presented. Next, the current development of almost all theory and technologies about the fault diagnosis method based on equivalent external load, such as equivalent external load model, calculation method of the residual response, optimization algorithm used to identify the fault, fault identification accuracy index, solution of the low accuracy of the formulated dynamic model, preprocess of the monitored signal and so on, are summarized. The research fruit of the discussed method at home is also reviewed. Finally, the future research subjects of the fault diagnosis method based on equivalent external load are suggested according to the analysis of the current development and the authors’ knowledge.
