Abstract An effective method was presented to locate the best vibration measurement points in the small module space gear life experiment, for overcoming the blindness on arranging measurement points by the traditional methods, and improving the precision of signal testing. The stiffness distribution of the system was obtained by using the finite element modal and harmonic response analysis. The vector sum of harmonic response amplitude and the theoretical best location of vibration measurement point were acquired. The theoretical best vibration measurement points were verified by using the kurtosis index method based on a space gear vibration platform. The experimental results show that eight out of nine theoretical points are in good agreement with the experimental results. It verifies the validity of the presented method. The present work provides a theoretical and experimental foundation for the further research of space vehicle transmission mechanism life.
