Abstract The mode contribution and the panel acoustic contribution analysis of an experimental gearbox are discussed in this research. The main contribution to the modal and the main panel of the noise radiation are determined. Then, the relationship between the surface vibration and radiated noise of the gearbox is investigated according to the finite element method combined with the vibration velocity method. On the basis of above investigation, the radiated sound power level of the main panels of the gearbox is calculated. This parameter and the natural frequency of the main contribution mode could be an objective function of the gearbox vibration and noise reduction. Optimization program which is wrote by APDL. According to the simulation analysis, an optimal thickness for the gearbox can be obtained. The results of this paper show that this method is effective for noise and vibration reduction. It is helpful for the optimization design of the gearbox.
