Abstract By using cavitation ultrasonic test and pressure test technique, the effect of gun firing impulsive load on performance of recoil brake was researched. The results show that the non-working chamber has no vacuum but full of recoil oil foam at the end of recoiling, recoil oil foam offers much smaller hydraulic resistance during counter-recoiling course, and the counterrecoil hydraulic resistance offered by control chamber is greater than the traditional calculated value. Comparisons show that when take the fitted value 0.036, the branch counterrecoil resistance coefficient take the value about 4.5 times of the master stream recoil resistance coefficient, the gun counterrecoil velocity calculated is closer to the measured velocity in ball firing test. The velocity calculated by traditional method is in agreement with the measured velocity in artificial recoil test. The traditional vacuum hypothesis is not applicable in gun firing with impulsive load effect. The recoil braking chart modified is more instructive for recoil brake design.
