Abstract A theoretical mathematical model of collision cylinders was established on the basis of contact dynamics and elastic line-contact theory and then the impact noise radiated by collision cylinders had been computed by using the acoustical theory. Afterwards, a numerical simulation method used to compute transient noise had been presented based on finite element method (FEM) and transient boundary element method (TBEM). Then impact noise radiated by collision of cylinders was studied with FEM/TBEM and the visualization of transient sound wave has been realized. Numerical simulated results were compared with theoretical results as well as Hertz contact model. It indicates that simulated results are in good agreement with theoretical results; whereas Hertz contact model may cause greater error. In addition, the effect of impact velocity and elastic modulus on collision of two cylinders is discussed.
