Abstract The characteristics of dynamic deformation and failure process of the slopes with an anti-dip weak interlayer under earthquakes are studied by the shaking table model test. Test results show that: (1) The deformation and failure process of slopes under earthquakes are not only related to the types, loading direction and vibration intensity of the earthquake waves, but also related to the elevation of slopes and the thickness of weak interlayer. (2) The slopes with an anti-dip weak interlayer failed in the mode of “crack - shatter collapse” under earthquakes, having the characteristics of band-like collapse mainly controlled by the cracks on the surface of slopes. The deformation and failure concentrated mainly in the upper part of slopes, which is due to the significant amplification in that part. (3) Compared to the thin weak interlayer, the thick one plays an important role in energy dissipation and shock absorption during the shaking.
