Abstract The rotational–transverse vibration coupling model for Serpentine Belt Accessory Drive (SBAD) system is presented in which belt bending stiffness is incorporated. A three pulleys SBAD system is taken as an example. The effects of the longitudinal stiffness, bending stiffness and linear density of the belt on the dynamic characteristics such as the transverse deflections, the tension fluctuation of the belt and the rotation angle of the tensioner arm are investigated. One optimization strategy is proposed and implemented to control the vibration. In the optimization strategy, the belt longitudinal stiffness, tensioner stiffness and tensioner arm length are taken to be design variables, while the transverse deflections of belt, the fluctuation of belt tension and the rotation angle of the tensioner arm are used to define the objective functions. On the basis of the above optimization results, the belt bending stiffness is reduced to further control vibration of the system.
