Abstract In order to reduce the drive axle whine at the vehicle speed of 90 km/h, vehicle tests were carried out and it was found the problem was caused by the axle housingresonance, which was excitated by the gear engagement. A dynamic vibration absorber was applied to alleviate the vibration of the drive axle. The design of the dynamic vibration absorber was described in detail, including the parameter design, structural design, installation position and verification of vibration reduction effect. The simulation and experimental results show that, the vibration amplitude of the axle housing is about 75% lower than that of the initial structure, and the total noise at 90 km/h is reduced by about 3 dB (A) while the gear order noise is decreased by 6 dB (A). The study shows the dynamic vibration absorber is aneffective method for the noise and vibration control of drive axles, and it has certain practical value in engineering.
