Abstract Hybrid testing is an important structural seismic test method. Research shows that the action of an earthquake onto structures is often bi-directional instead of unidirectional; that bi-directional earthquake results in more damage to structures. Therefore, it makes sense to perform an accurate bi-directional hybrid test. This paper studies the principle of the bi-directional hybrid test, which first explains the method of coordinate transformation and the transformation from actuator force to restoring force. An outer loop control method is presented based on numerical iteration strategy. Meanwhile, force control for the redundant actuators is proposed. The effectiveness of the schemes in terms of accuracy is also validated through numerical simulations and real tests.
