Abstract The vortex-induced vibration of flexible tandom cylinders with large aspect ratio and low mass ratio was studied by model tests and CFD numerical simulations.By analyzing the characteristics of the tandem cylinders such as amplitude, vibration frequency, force characteristics and flow field structure, the effects of flow velocity and distance between tandem cylinders on the vortex-induced vibration characteristics of downstream cylinder were investigated.It is found that the amplitudes of vortex-induced vibration of the upstream and downstream cylinders, are rather different and the dominant frequencies are also different when the velocity is greater than a certain value.Thus the concept of separate reduced velocity Ur was proposed.Both the velocity and spacing affect the effect of upstream wake on downstream cylinder.The velocity affects the strength and development of the upstream wake, and the spacing affects the development space of the upstream wake and the contact position between upstream wake and downstream cylinder.
