A study on damage and failure modes of a voided slab bridge under earthquake excitations considering structural deterioration |

Abstract To reveal the effects of structural deterioration on the seismic performance of precast voided slab bridges, dynamic analytical methods were proposed for voided slab bridges with damaged joints and deteriorative materials.In combination with an actual bridge, experimental results and solid numerical simulations were used to validate the proposed methods.Nonlinear time history analyses were conducted to investigate the damage and failure modes of voided slab bridge under earthquake excitations considering structural deterioration.The results show that structural deterioration changes the relative dynamic characteristics between the superstructure and the substructure of the bridge, leading to the changes in the damage and failure modes of the bridge, especially under the soil-site ground motions.Structural deterioration increases the displacement and residual displacement responses of slab ends, aggravates the damage states of bearings, and also increases the curvature response of columns significantly and even causes severe structural damage to the columns.In the soil-site ground motions, the bridge only suffers from the displacement damage when the structural deterioration is not incorporated, but suffers both from the displacement damage and the structural damage to the columns when structural deterioration is considered.Therefore, the seismic designs and retrofits may fail without considering structural deterioration in the practices of the life-cycle seismic design, and the seismic assessment and retrofit of existing bridges.
