Abstract Steam flow excitation force in blade tip clearance of a steam turbine seriously influences the stable operation of its rotor.The first full-cycle stage model of the steam turbine with blade tip seal was calculated by the SST k-ω model and the finite volume method to study flow characteristics of leakage vortices and steam flow excitation force in blade tip seal under different conditions.The cavity vortices and reflux vortices form in outlet cavity when the leakage flow passes through the blade tip seal.The reflux vortices and cavity vortices have an opposite rotation direction.The steamline near cavity inlet sharply curves with the increase of clearance.Under the condition of large clearance, the position of vortex core in cavity changes.The vortex core at the upper part of small clearance migrates downstream and the lower part of large clearance migrates upstream.Steam flow excitation force on blade tip should increases by 76% and the angle increases by 19.6% because of the variation of vortex core position.
