To analyze the non-stationary feature of acoustic emission (AE) signal from pipeline valve leakage, we present the HHT method which is the hybrid of Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) and Hilbert transform method for AE detection. Using EEMD method, the detected leakage signal was treated with self-adaptive decomposed into a series of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF). Then those IMF were analyzed using the Hilbert spectrum and HHT marginal spectrum, from which, the key characteristics of AE signal in valve leakage can be extracted. The HHT method can overcome limitations of nonlinear signal in time-frequency analysis, and can avoid the mode mixing caused by EMD method. We verified that the Hilbert spectrum has higher time-frequency resolutions compare to those from STFT spectrum, By analyzing the hilbert marginal spectrum, we also identified the main function frequency of signal leakage. This research showed that HHT method can be successfully applied in acoustic emission testing of valve leakage.
