Analytical prediction method for crashworthiness of ship stiffened panels

Abstract:In order to predict the crashworthiness of stiffened ship panels rapidly, an analytical method to obtain the crashworthiness of stiffened ship panels collided by a bulbous bow was proposed in the present paper. Stiffened ship panels will experience large deformation to initial fracture. For the large deformation process, the theoretical deformation modes for the plate and the attached stiffeners were proposed. Moreover, the deformation resistances for the plate and the attached stiffeners were obtained according to the theory of plastic mechanics. For the initial fracture, the expression to obtain the critical penetration depth of the plate was built. In addition, the expression to calculate the influence of the stiffener on the critical penetration depth of the plate was derived by considering the coupling effect between the stiffener and the plate. The method to obtain the critical penetration depth of the stiffened panels was finally established. Moreover, model tests were performed to validate the accuracy of the proposed analytical expressions. The research in this paper is a contribution for accurate and rapid assessment of the crashworthiness of stiffened ship panels.
