Three-dimensional finite element EMI model for a damaged beam and its parameters

Abstract:The three dimensional finite element EMI model is established by employing the commercial software ANSYS. In this model, the effect of the bonding layer between the piezoelectric patches and the beam on the EMI signatures is considered and thus a coupled structural system consisting of PZT patches, bonding layer and host beam is proposed in this paper. Comparison with existing experimental and numerical results by other methods is made to validate the present EMI model. The effects of various parameters including the crack depth on the EMI signatures are highlighted. Numerical results indicate the proposed model can be employed for crack detection. Finally, the effects of finite element size on calculated results in the high frequency range are also discussed.
