Parametric Studies of Seismic Eccentric Pounding Responses For Simply-supported Girder Bridges under Transverse Earthquake

Abstract:During Wenchuan earthquake, some lateral shear keys of bridges suffered severe damage partly caused by pounding between shear keys and girders. Based on the pounding phenomenon between shear keys and girders under strong ground motions,a pounding model of single column considering the eccentric distance between shear keys and girders, nonlinear behaviors of bearing and the elasto-plastic behaviors of piers has been developed. With the time history analysis method for the nonlinear seismic responses of structues, many parameters that have effects on lateral seismic response of bridges such as eccentric distance, pounding stiffness, initial gap between shear key and girder, linear stiffness of pier, mass ratio of supstructure and bent cap, period ratio of supstructure and substructure, and elasto-plastic behaviors of piers are analyzed. The results indicate that the pounding considering the eccentric distance between shear keys and girders enhances the systematic non-linearity, ignoring the eccentric pounding response in the analysis for lower hight girder (e<70cm) can cause nonconservative results, which should pay more attention in the future.
