Abstract:In recent years, fluid viscous dampers have been widely applied to structural vibration-reduction and control, however, the current damping design procedures are still needed to be further improved and supplemented for practical design and engineering application of viscous damping structures. Pursuant to this, a practical design procedure for damped structure with fluid viscous dampers is proposed and discussed, which refer to the analysis of basic principle and mechanical model of viscous damping structure, the discussion on specific designing process with the thought of designing the main structure and energy-dissipating components respectively, and the calculating equations about performance parameter design of viscous dampers-braces, etc. In the end, with the combination of a practical milt-story RC frame which needs to be retrofitted by viscous dampers-braces, the design method for viscous damping structures in JSSI Manual is introduced to make the comparative analysis and research, it is concluded that the practical design procedure proposed in this paper have the better control effect and well-distributed performances of the whole structure, so that it will be helpful for solving the problems of weak storey in the structure. Moreover, the case study also indicates that this practical design procedure can well conform with China’s current design codes, and therefore it can be well applied to engineering design for satisfying various demands proposed by owners or achieving structural performance objectives under different earthquake risk levels.
