Abstract:The equivalent static wind load of large hyperbolic cooling towers with a height over 165m is not provided in the code of China. In the absence of systematic research, we can learn the relevant provisions from foreign standards. Firstly, taking single tower for an example, some appropriate transformations are made to the formula of equivalent static wind load from German’s code , which result in an expression entirely consistent with China’s code, except the discrepancy on the gust loading factor and mean wind pressure distribution coefficient, and then comparison is made between the value of two parameters provided in China’s code and German’s code. Secondly, using finite element method, the wind induced responses of the three cooling towers with different heights are calculated under the action of different equivalent static wind load which are obtained according to Chinese code and Germany code respectively. Based on the analysis of the results, provisions in China’s cod about equivalent static wind load are adaptive even for the 200m high cooling towers.
