Abstract:The expanded polystyrene(EPS) concrete specimens with 0~40% EPS volume conent were prepared. Dynamic compressive experiments were carried on using the split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB). The stress–strain curves of EPS concrete under different strain rate were obtained. The result indicated that the strain rate effects of EPS concrete is obviously different from normal concrete. The relations between the compression strength and the stress rate were investigated for two types of EPS bead size and four types of EPS volume content. The empirical formulas were given too. The toughness index for characterizing EPS concrete energy–absorption properties was defined. The relations between toughness index and stress rate were researched for the above types of EPS concrete. The toughness index of EPS concrete increased significantly with the EPS volume content increasing, especially for EPS concrete with small bead size.
