Abstract: Noise that has same frequency spectrum with the Chinese speech intelligibility test signals recorded in anechoic chamber is obtained from the pink noise signal. Both noise and test signals are convolved with binaural room impulse responses after headphone equalization and mixed each other according to certain signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), then reproduced over headphone. Subjective Chinese speech intelligibility test is carried out by the listeners. The effect of speaking rate on Chinese speech intelligibility in room under different SNR and reverberation time condition is discussed. The preferred rate of Chinese speaking is also investigated. The result show that reverberation time at listening positions in room, SNR and speaking rate have significant effects on the intelligibility of Chinese speech, and the effect of SNR is more significant than that of reverberation time and speaking rate. The results also show that the preferred rate of Chinese speaking for subjects is 4.0 syllables per second in this study.
