Abstract:Numerical simulation of the berthing process between two engineering ships by an added mass model was carried out. The response of the struck ship as well as the rubber fender under the berthing impact was studied. Based on such indexes as the maximum berthing force, the energy absorption ratio, the ultimate allowable berthing speed etc, performance of three types of rubber fender was compared and analyzed. Advice for the selection of rubber fenders considering the vessel’s structural safety is finally proposed.
