Abstract Based on electrical-mechanical analogies, a new vehicle suspension employing inerter was designed. Pro/E software was used to establish a three-dimensional solid model of mechanical inerter, and through the interface program Mech/Pro the model was imported into the dynamic simulation software ADAMS, where it was connected with the elastic element and damper, and a virtual prototyping model of a quarter-vehicle suspension was built. In ADAMS and Matlab/Simulink co-simulation environment, the dynamic performance of the suspension was analysed respectively with sinusoidal input, random input and step input. The simulation results show that the inerter has a feature of "passing high-frequency, bufferring low-frequency", and comparing with the traditional passive suspension, the suspension employing inerter can significantly reduce the automobile vibration acceleration of vehicle body, thus improve the vehicle ride comfort.
