Abstract The acoustic beam emitted by the transmitting and receiving probe located near the liquid surface height of the liquid tank outer wall passes through the tank wall to generate a projected area on the inner wall. In this paper, the relation between the proportion of liquid in the projected area and the energy is used to detect the change of liquid level in the range of probe height. The energy of the echo signal received by the probe is inversely proportional to the height of the liquid level, thus enabling determination of its position. The experimental system is set up, the echo signal is collected, and the liquid surface position relative to the probe is obtained by substituting the received energy value into the expression of the proportion of area. The liquid level calculation results are consistent with the actual liquid level position, and the error between the two is only less than 2.465 mm. The finite element simulation calculation also verified the relationship between the energy received by the probe and the changes in liquid level.
