Abstract Numerical simulations for fixed circular cylinders with diameter of 0.12m are performed in a two-dimensional (2D) domain with the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and SST turbulent model. The Re number ranges from 1.2×105 to 3.7×105. In order to insure the simulation quality, a suitable computational domain is put forward with a high quality partitioning gird strategy. Based on the obtained aerodynamic coefficients time histories, mean and root-mean-square values, as well as Strouhal (St) number, grid and time step independency check are carried out as to identify suitable simulation parameters. Then, aerodynamic coefficients and St number of the cable at various Re numbers are predicted. After comparing the present results with available references, it is recommended that the 2D RANS simulation for fixed circular cylinders may not be capable of obtaining acceptable aerodynamics predictions.
