Abstract:In R.C. bridge pier, reinforcement arrangements of combined stirrups are complicated, which are difficult to construct, demand large quantity of rolled steel and hard to assure the quality of construction. According to these problems, a new type of reinforcement arrangement is proposed in this paper, called S-Clip. In order to validate the effect of this reinforcement, two groups of big sized piers were made, which are different from longitudinal reinforcement ratio. By the low cyclic reversed loading test, the seismic behavior is studied on the each bridge pier which uses conventional combined stirrups and S-Clip stirrups separately. The results indicate that the piers using new type reinforcement are not only take full advantage of material capability and have the same carrying capacity as the conventional one, but also have improved ductility. The application of this new type of reinforcement is in favor of improvement engineering quality. It speeds up the construction progress and economizes rolled steel. Therefore, the application of this technique has extensive prospect. It is very important for both the theory of structure and its development.
