Abstract:The basic concept, damping mechanism, application and research status of particle damping technology are introduced; the analytical, numerical and experimental developments, together with their pros and cons are systematically expounded; and a discrete element method of simulating a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structure with a particle damper system is illustrated. The application of particle damping technology in civil engineering and its research situation are mainly discussed, in which the advantages and potential usages are demonstrated, while the difficulties and deficiencies in the present studies are also indicated, and some recommendations are provided.
