Abstract:A new type of particle impact damped dynamic vibration absorber, which consists of a elastic element and a box partially filled with impact particles, is designed and used in the vibration control of a five-storey frame structure model. The dynamic properties of this type of damped dynamic vibration absorber are experimentally compared with these of the classical dynamic vibration absorber, which has the same mass and stiffness as the damped absorber. The frequency response functions (FRFs) of the frame structure with these two types of absorbers are measured respectively, it is shown that the particle impact damped absorber has a wider frequency band than that of the classical absorber. Vibration control test results of the frame structure subjected to random excitation demonstrated that the particle impact damped dynamic vibration absorber exhibits a better random vibration absorption behavior than that of the classical dynamic vibration absorber. It is expected that this new type of dynamic vibration absorber can be applied in the control of seismic and wind excited vibration response for tall buildings.
