Seismic response characteristics analysis of municipal solid waste landfills

Abstract:The 2-D finite element equivalent linear numerical simulations have been performed to a typical valley-type landfill nonlinear analysis. Some factors such as foundation stiffness, dynamic load period and amplitude, the rigidity of MSW landfills are considered to investigate the acceleration response characteristics at the top of landfills from the angle of the relationship of the fundamental period of site and landfill( and ) and the dominant period of the earthquake ( ). The universality law of acceleration response characteristics of landfills has been obtained: Different factors that influence the landfill seismic response can be interpreted as all factors which change the relative value of above three periods. when = = ,the response value reaches the maximum in this case; if = or = , the response value on the middle level; when the three periods have largest difference , which can lead to the minimum response value. In normal case , is bigger, is smaller, as for density MSW and landfill time longer ,shear wave velocity increase lead to becomes smaller; and seismic amplitude increase the and becomes bigger as the effects of material nonlinearity, which due to the three periods easy to become similar and the seismic response value become bigger. Results can be helpful for Seismic design of municipal solid waste landfills.
