Abstract:The extended finite element method (XFEM) is applied to solve dynamic fracture problems in 2D elastic piezoelectric solids. The XFEM allows the representation of crack faces independent of the mesh, so mesh generation can be greatly simplified and re-meshing can be avoided as the crack grows. The dynamic intensity factors (DIFs) are evaluated using the contour interaction integral technique. The influence of the standard mechanical crack tip enrichment functions and the electro-mechanical crack tip enrichment functions on the DIFs is compared. It shows that the standard mechanical crack tip enrichment functions are efficient to analyze the dynamic fracture problems in piezoelectric solids. The influence of the poling direction on the DIFs is investigated. The DIFs obtained with the XFEM are compared with other numerical solutions, and remarkable agreements can be observed.
