Abstract:The dynamic buckling problem of elastic columns under axial time-varying impulsive load is investigated on the basis of the stress wave theory. A semi-analytical and semi-numerical method is furnished to solve this kind of problems by use of a supplementary restraint equation derived at the stress wave front. The straight column under triangular pulse load is investigated as an example. The critical buckling length, initial buckling mode and the value of the dynamic parameter is calculated and the influence of peak value and duration of the pulse load is also discussed. The feature of the buckling deformation of the column under triangular pulse load is summarized compared with that under step load.
