The experiments on magnetorheological fluid damper(MRD) are carried out to investigate the characteristics of SG-MRD40 and RD-1005-3 dampers. Considering that the existing nonlinear hysteretic biviscous model can not be used to fit the curve of damping force vs. damper velocity well at low frequency, two parameters and are adopted in the model. is used to describe the characteristics of damper at yield phase when the absolute value of velocity is increased, otherwise, is used when the absolute value of velocity is reduced. The yield force is also introduced in this model. The improved model describes the characters of MRD under different states at yield phase. The results show that the improved model is more excellent than the existing nonlinear hysteretic biviscous model. It can be used to describe the characteristics of MRD at yield phase well, and is applicable at more large range of frequency.
