To study the stability of chatter while cutting slender shaft, through the study on chatter mechanism of cutting slender shaft, the analysis model of regenerative chatter is established, which is a two-DOF model of coupling vibration of the tool and slender shaft. The stability of delay dynamic equations are analyzed using an analytical method to get the stability limit figure of cutting chatter about cutting width and rotational speed. The figure shows that the limit width of two-DOF system is reduced by 28.6% compared to single-DOF system. This result can provide theoretical cutting parameters for highly efficient and stable processing of flexible workpieces. The cutting chatter experiments of the slender shaft are done in turn-milling center. Compared with the stability limit figure, the experiment results agree well with the theory. And the features of tool and shaft during chatter are summarized. Which are the important identifications when monitoring and warning the cutting chatter.
