The structural deformation mechanism of web girders subjected to in-plane load during ship collision and grounding accident were investigated with the plastic analytical theory and some new features during deformation process were found. A new deformation model for ship web girders subjected to in-plane force was proposed based on the new features. In the new model, the analytical formulae for energy dissipation, instantaneous force and mean resistance of web girders were obtained by plastic analysis. Finally, the new analytical method was verified by two previous model tests. The results of the new analytical method and model tests match well. Benefiting from its good accuracy and simplicity, the new analytical method can be a useful tool in preliminary structural design stage for ship crashworthiness and quick assessment for risk during ship collision and grounding accidents.
