Abstract:To explore the influence of structural configuration on the perforation resistance of composite armor system of warship topside, low velocity ballistic impact experiments were carried out. The outer and inner composite armor systems on warship topside were simulated through homogeneous steel plates prefaced and backed by composite laminates, respectively. Failure modes as well as energy absorptions for the two types of combined targets were analyzed and compared with each other. Based on the experimental results, an equation was obtained to predict the residual velocities for the combined targets that consist of front steel plates and composite backing armors. Results show that the difference of failure modes for the composite armors in two types of combined targets mainly exhibits in the amount of sheared fibres. While the failure modes of the steel plates in two types of combined targets are distinct due to the influences of composite armors. The combined targets that consist of front steel plates and composite backing armors absorb much more energies than the combined targets that consist of front composite armors and steel backing plates. It is shown that theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experimental results for the combined targets that consist of front steel plates and composite backing armors.
