A series of experimental tests are carried out to study the effect of hammer pulse forces on friction squealing noise in this paper. The result shows that a hammer pulse force applied on friction system can lead to friction squeal noise. A time-frequency analysis of this kind of hammer-excited friction squeal noise is performed. The analysis result clearly demonstrates that the hammer-excited friction squeal noise and the self-excited friction squeal noise have the same time-frequency characteristics. Further test research is performed for understanding the origin of hammer-excited squeal noise. The test result shows that there is a very close relationship between the debris and friction squeal noise. It is found that the hammer pulse force applied on friction system can cause more debris. Thus, the hammer-excited squeal noise formation is attributed to the effect of a large amount of debris generated in a very short time.
